Need a Halloween idea that is cheerful, inexpensive and quick enough for a busy school morning? A tray of clementines can become a crowd of tiny pumpkin characters in about 15 minutes. Children can choose silly, sleepy, surprised or spooky faces, then help arrange the finished fruit on a platter.

The version below uses removable paper face pieces or a food-safe edible marker. We do not recommend drawing on fruit with an ordinary permanent marker. Sharpie states that its markers should not be used on areas that may contact food or the mouth. Because children touch the peel and then handle the fruit inside, the removable-paper method is the simplest cautious option.

What You Need

  • Clementines, mandarins or other easy-peel small oranges
  • The free Buybili Halloween Clementine Faces printable
  • Scissors
  • Removable clear sticker paper, full-sheet label paper or small pieces of removable tape
  • A clean tray or shallow basket
  • Optional: autumn leaves made from paper for decorating the tray
  • Optional: a marker specifically labeled by its manufacturer as edible and suitable for direct food use

Do not use ordinary craft markers or permanent markers on food. If you use an edible marker, follow the exact package directions and confirm that it is intended for direct food contact.

How to Make Halloween Clementine Faces

1

Wash your hands and the fruit

Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Rinse each clementine thoroughly under plain running water, then dry it with a clean towel. The FDA advises washing produce even when the peel will not be eaten, because dirt and bacteria on the outside can transfer to the fruit during peeling. Do not wash produce with soap or detergent.

2

Print the face sheet

Print page 2 of the free pack on removable clear sticker paper for the cleanest result. Regular printer paper also works: cut out a face and attach it with a very small loop of removable tape. The paper is decoration only and must be removed before the fruit is peeled.

3

Let each child choose a face

Use page 1 as an idea board. Children can choose a grin, wink, surprised face, sleepy face or friendly jack-o'-lantern. For a classroom activity, place the face pieces in small bowls so children can choose without handling all of them.

4

Add the removable face

Press the paper face gently onto the intact, dry peel. Avoid covering soft spots or damaged areas. Keep the decoration on the outside only; do not cut or puncture the fruit.

5

Build the pumpkin patch

Arrange the clementines in a single layer or a small mound on a clean tray. Add the printable sign from page 3: “Little Pumpkin Treats - Please remove the sticker before peeling.”

6

Serve or pack

For individual treats, place each clementine in a small paper bag and add one of the printable gift tags. If the fruit will be offered at school, check the classroom's food and allergy rules first.

Five Easy Ways to Use Them

  1. Classroom snack tray: Make one face per child and use the printable tray sign.
  2. Halloween lunchbox surprise: Add one decorated clementine and a short note.
  3. Party activity: Let children pick pre-cut facial features and build a character.
  4. Front-door treat alternative: Offer packaged or parent-approved fruit only if local conditions and school/community rules make that appropriate.
  5. Family movie-night centerpiece: Fill a bowl with different expressions and vote for the funniest face.

Make It a Screen-Free Game

Turn the snack into a quick emotion-matching activity. Ask children to choose a face that looks excited, nervous, sleepy or surprised. Then invite them to copy the expression, name a time they felt that way or invent a one-sentence story about their clementine character.

For older children, create a “mystery pumpkin” game. One person secretly chooses a face from the idea sheet while the others ask yes-or-no questions: “Is it smiling?” “Does it have triangle eyes?” “Is one eye closed?”

Classroom and Food-Safety Notes

  • Ask the teacher before bringing any food into class.
  • Check school rules and individual allergy or dietary needs.
  • Use clean hands, scissors and work surfaces.
  • Rinse produce under running water and dry it before decorating.
  • Do not use soap, detergent or commercial produce wash.
  • Do not puncture or cut the fruit for decoration.
  • Remove all paper, stickers and tape before peeling.
  • An adult should handle cutting and supervise younger children.
  • Discard fruit that is bruised, damaged or spoiled.

A Simple Treat That Children Can Personalize

The fun of this project is not perfect drawing or matching faces. It is watching a plain bowl of fruit turn into a group of tiny characters. Some will look silly, some spooky and some completely unexpected - and that variety is what makes the tray charming.
