Sock Toss turns a pile of clean laundry into a quick indoor game. It takes a minute to set up, works in most rooms and is easy to make harder or easier as you play.

What You Need

  • Clean socks, rolled into balls (6–10 pairs is plenty)
  • A laundry basket or large bowl
  • A clear playing area, with tape or a sheet of paper to mark a throwing line

Basic Setup and Rules

  1. Clear the floor and move breakable objects away from the throwing area.
  2. Place the basket on the floor and mark a throwing line a few steps away.
  3. Each player throws three sock balls per turn from behind the line.
  4. Score one point for every sock that lands and stays in the basket.
  5. Collect the socks together and take the next turn.

5 Ways to Play

1. Step Back

After every successful round, move the basket one step farther away. See how far you can get before missing.

2. Different Throwing Positions

Throw while sitting, kneeling, standing on one foot or using the non-dominant hand. Let your child pick the next position.

3. Numbered Targets

Set out two or three containers or paper circles and label them 1, 2 and 3. Place the 3-point target farthest away and add up the score.

4. Team Score

Play cooperatively instead of competing. Everyone throws toward one shared goal, such as 20 socks in the basket, and celebrates together.

5. Gentle Obstacle Route

Make a short route with a pillow to step over and a chair to walk around. At the end of the route, take one throw. Keep the route slow and simple.

Adapting the Game

Small room

Use a bowl or small box as the target, throw from a seated position and keep the basket close to a wall so socks don't scatter.

A group of children

Split into teams, give each team a basket, and take turns so only one person throws at a time.

Easier or harder

Move the line closer for younger players, or use a smaller target for older children.

Safety: Before playing, clear away lamps, glasses and anything breakable, and only throw soft rolled socks.
